These Custom Reserve pieces are the next step in our development as a company here at ACB. They have taken a few years from concept to initial designs, to working prototypes, to this final project, and we are so excited to share these with you!

There are a couple of big points to differentiate the Custom Reserve line from our standard series:

  1. The O is underlined in the name for a reason: the Custom Reserve line feels incredibly open. These are designed to be played with a full air stream and as little body tension as possible. We do have a few videos to share with everyone who purchases a CR line mouthpiece to help in the acclimation process. Some will find it instantly easy to go from a standard series piece to the CR line, but even I found it a bit of an adjustment that is 100% worth the effort! The commercial pieces especially are a huge step ahead as they have such a full and rich sound while still maintaining tremendous efficiency.
  2. The Custom Reserve mouthpieces only come in this exclusive blank and only in brushed gold plate. We could potentially do a silver plated piece on request, but no blank substitutions. This external blank profile design is absolutely paramount to all the of the elements that make these pieces so unique. We will not be offering the Custom Reserve in acrylic or delrin at the moment due to the internal specs being too crucial to the playability of the CR line. We are working on an acrylic rim solution but still have not been happy with the results in prototyping.
  3. There are no alterations on these pieces because of their design. We can customize a standard series line mouthpiece if needed, but the CR pieces each have very specialized rim, cup, throat, throat length, backbore taper, and other dimensions to optimize them fully. We have spent the time really fine-tuning these!

Here's a quick comparison of the ACB 3C  versus the new CR 3+ (please note I don't normally play this size but had both available at the home studio for a video):

Custom Reserve Mouthpiece Sizes:

The sizes in the Custom Reserve line are also a bit limited, based on over a decade of the most popular models we sell at ACB. Other cups can potentially be ordered but will be a 12-14 week wait most likely.

While totally revised, there are some relative comparisons between our Standard Series line and these Custom Reserve mouthpieces. If you are familiar with the rims in our Standard Series, each of these below they will feel similar on the embouchure.   More detailed videos and technical  information coming shortly.

    CR 3F+ flugel piece

Posted by David F. Paxton on 3rd Jun 2024

As much as I like my ACB standard series flugel m--pieces, the new CR CF+ is a clear step up. It is more free-blowing with a truer flugel sound than the other two, matched with the ADAMS F5 flugel. Low to high range is there and accurate. Lovely sound. This combo is the most in tune and flugel-like set up I've had to date. I did A/B comparisons of each m-piece to the CR 3F+ just to be certain. The new CF+ shines. The break in period/acclimation was moderate, as it was with the also-recently-acquired (trumpet) CR D+ mouthpiece. That could be due to playing on other CR pieces within last year and a half. Maybe I've gotten used to them.

    CUSTOM RESERVE TRUMPET MOUTHPIECE 0+

Posted by Gordon on 2nd Jan 2024

The mouthpiece arrived during my Christmas playing season so I didn't get the chance to properly play it until last week. Acclimatisation was fairly easy as I am used to the 0B rim and I have played a lot of very open mouthpieces. In summary: It speaks very easily. Works well in my Eb trumpet and even piccolo - if i wanted to go this big for any reason. Even intonation (but I am used to playing on massive mouthpieces). The relaxed throat opening means it also articulates well on rotary trumpet. Easier to play quietly on - greater dynamic range than the standard 0B. Down sides: Its metal and I have an allergy, but I get away with gold. Thats why I was on the acrylic 0B and 0C. Its not a "magic bullet" but if you put the owrk in you will get a lot out of it.

Great upgrade from the standard line!

Posted by Bob Miller on 30th Dec 2023

I was already playing on a standard line TA1, and really like it. It took me a couple weeks to really feel secure playing on the Custom Reserve TA1+, but now I'm definitely noticing a big difference. Articulation is easier, and it feels more responsive with more color to the sound. This mouthpiece also "speaks" with less effort. I'm very pleased with this mouthpiece!

    CR 2+

Posted by Brendan Locke on 18th Dec 2023

This is an extraordinarily well built mouthpiece. However- they're 100% correct that it takes quite a bit to get used to. It plays very different from any other piece I've tried. Hoping I can make it my main piece as it really does make a difference in intonation and note centers.

    4+ & L3+

Posted by Alex on 17th Oct 2023

I bought both the 4+ and the L3+ to replace the 5CS and Lead 1 I have and I couldn't be happier with the results. Super efficient and easy to play. The richness in tone and sound compared to the standard series I came from is insane. I was able to actually pick up the L3+ and play it on a gig 30 minutes later with no issues. Love these mouthpieces and love this company! Acbassador for life!

This is the best sounding mouthpiece I have ever played, and I would whole-heartedly recommend it.

    CR TA-1+

Posted by Kevin Ralston on 2nd Jun 2023

I've had the CR TA-1+ for a couple of days now. As far as an acclimation period to get used to the open throat - I haven't had any problem. It plays beautiful. Been using a M. Unity as my go-to which is rather open throat so that may be why I haven't needed time to get used to it. The ACB CR is more so and I find it very expressive and can get good ring or good mellow easily. Loving' it.

    ACB Custom Reserve Mouthpice

Posted by Dave Dubinsky on 9th Apr 2023

I’ve now been playing on my ACB CR L3+ mouthpiece for roughly four months, and love the full, rich, centered tone quality achieved, throughout 3 full octaves, while providing ease of flexibility, on demand. I just ordered and received a second CR L3+, to serve as a back-up, if I ever need it. Excellent design, appearance and functionality! Thank you, Trent and ACB R&D!
