This would be a remarkable trombone for anyone seeking a trombone for jazz, commercial playing, pit orchestra, or a "small bore" for chamber music/solo recital/classical music.

A Great All Around Trombone! Ideal for the player who needs versatility from a trombone!

We are excited to have this pre-owned trombone in the shop! It was owned/played by one of Kansas City's best jazz trombonists. It responds very nicely! The slide is quick and easy to play with fantastic action. The ergonomic design of the handlside makes this instrument very comfortable to play. This trombone is a unique bore size at .512". Little larger than the classic .508" size (think King 3B) but not quite as large as medium bore .525, it delivers a round, warm, full sound while still feeling very agile.

The slide, we believe, is bronze outer slide which helps deliver warmth and richness to the tone.

The trombone's owner did has some customized work done to this trombone including having the brace on the bell moved forward to achieve a more comfortable grip/balance when playing the instrument. The right hand slide brace has been replaced with a straight brace.

Received a chemical bath/cleaning at Austin Custom Brass.

Per the maker: This is the third of a set of three trombone models made for trombonist Bart Van Lier by Kuhnl & Hoyer in Markt Erlbach, Germany.  The others being of .480/88" and .500" bore.  This model is the largest of the three.  Its .512" hand slide is slightly larger than most other trombones of this style, giving it a distinctive broader tone and open blow. The hand slide is a few millimeters wider than other small bore trombones, so this may be more comfortable for players with a wider jaw or larger hands.

The 512 is not only a nice jazz and commercial music trombone, but is also useful for chamber music, orchestras and bands with the matching mouthpiece setup.  This 512 is lighter and faster than the feel of a Bach 36 or King 3B+, and it's warmer than a Bach LT16M, splitting the difference to give you a captivating big tone.

...The hand slide action is perfectly smooth and quiet, even when clean and dry.  The bell rims are left unsoldered in the style of classic Conn and Holton designs, with homage to the classic Urbie Green model.  This bell style leads to a livelier response and lighter effort needed to manipulate the sound to your liking. The BVL trombones are sweet like that.

The condition of this trombone is not abnormal for an instrument played by an active professional. There are some pings in the slide crook (not in the slide tubes) and some worn plating at the handgrip of the handslide. The bell has a few small dents and dings in it, one very small one on the bell flare that is connected to a scratch in the finish, there are two on the bell stem (one about 2 inches above the engraving/logo and one at the top of the stem close to the main tuning slide). There are some light scuffs on the gooseneck. There are surface scratches in the finish on the inside of the bell along with a few very minor "mute pings". The main tuning slide has several small pings in the bow on the tuning slide. There are some minor scuffs and light scratches in the finish of the outer slide tubes. All issue are minor, and cosmetic only as they do not seem to affect the playability or sound of this instrument, and many could be easily addressed by a qualified repair technician.
